To Provide Compassionate End-Of-Life Care in an Atmosphere of Joy, Hope, Love and Peace

The staff at Groves Community Hospice believes that life is a unique experience - full of joys and sorrows.  However, every person at some point must face a time in which their focus becomes one of looking back over a life well-lived.  As each of us move into different stages of life, the goal of medical treatment may begin to change from curative to comfort.  At such time, our focus is to walk along with you on this journey while centering our team approach on physical and mental comfort, peace, reflection and support for you and your loved ones.

When are hospice services appropriate?

Hospice services may become appropriate when medical treatment for diseases are no longer effective, curative or beneficial for the patient.  This may occur as age and debility escalate or disease progression has exceeded any curative measures.  Hospice services neither hasten nor prolong death, but find a balance between comfort in which the patient can remain pain and symptom-free and yet enjoy life to its fullest.  Early referrals to hospice results in better pain management and control of other symptoms as well as allowing families to experience closure.

What hospice services are provided?

• RNs and an LPN will visit three times a week or more as needed for pain control and symptom management.  Nurses are available 24 hours a day for emergencies.
• Home Health Aides provide personal care and light housework.
• A Medical Social Worker provides assistance with resources and information and helps patients and families through counseling and support groups.
• A Chaplain tends to spiritual needs with non-denominational support and is available to assist families with bereavement services as well.
• A Volunteer Coordinator trains volunteers to be available for regular visits and companionship.  By request, volunteers can also escort patients to doctor appointments and assist families as needed.  Dieticians, Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists are also available to assist with the patient's functional level.
• Medical equipment, supplies and medication costs related to the terminal diagnosis are all covered under the hospice benefit.
• Our Medical Director, Dr. Scott Bowlin, provides oversight on all our patients.

Who pays for hospice services?

Hospice care is covered under Medicare and Medicaid.  Many private insurance plans and HMOs offer hospice program benefits as well.  There is usually no cost to patient or family.

Where is hospice care provided?

Hospice services will come to you.  Whether the choice is to remain at home or within a skilled nursing facility, we are prepared to serve the communities in the Kansas City metro area including Jackson, Ray, Clay and Lafayette counties.
